Although not brought up in a shooting family, Ian’s passion for game shooting has grown from his clay shooting background and love of the countryside.
Introduced to clay shooting through his work in the corporate event trade in the South of England, he soon became fully immersed in shooting, learning from professional instructors at events, and from the late Michael Pinker of Lady’s Wood Shooting School near Bristol. This love of shooting combined with his enthusiasm for teaching soon led him to take both CPSA and APSI instructor courses, passing both with flying colours.
Whilst working as a freelance instructor and event manager for a ‘blue chip’ event company in Surrey, he was invited by the owner for two days pheasant shooting in Ireland, with a team that included Roger Taylor from Queen – a true baptism of fire! This ignited his passion for game shooting and especially for teaching game shooting techniques and etiquette to youngsters and beginners.
In 2003, Ian moved to Scotland, starting a small shooting school from home and working as a freelance instructor at Gleneagles and Dunkeld Park Shooting School in Perthshire. It was at Dunkeld that he met Barry and Sam and started to build his Scottish contacts, realising that Scotland was game shooting heaven!
In 2005 Ian was appointed Manager and Chief Instructor at Dunkeld Park Shooting School with responsibility for all aspects of the facility and specialised in introducing novice game shooters to the sport through clay pigeon shooting. Despite the fantastic facilities at Dunkeld, the management were not forward thinking and Ian took up Barry’s offer to form Castle Gunmakers in 2008.
At Castle Gunmakers, Ian looks after the sporting agency side of the business as well as giving shooting and archery lessons, advising on gunfit and gun sales. Assisted by Barry, Ian runs a small pheasant shoot not far from the shop and is still a keen clay shooter.
